An expenditure of $1,428 is also being incurred for desks
for the School to be defrayed out of "Miscellaneous Works",
Public Works Department.
A Vote is also about to be taken for $4,357.86
to cover the salaries of the Master and Mistress of the School
for this year.
These three items combined represent the
cost to Government of this School for the current year.
Vote No. 14. At the end of last year a
number of representations were made to Government by house-
holders living in the Western portion of the City on the
Richmond Roads complaining of the prevalence of Mosquitoes
and of Malarial fever in their dwellings.
One writer, a wealthy Chinese living in a
house built for and formerly occupied by a European, stated
that at the time of writing two of his children and 6 of his
servants were laid up with Malarial fever.
This particular District has always been
malarious, and was the subject of a Commission whose Report
was included in the Sessional Papers for 1888, and efforts
have been made for a considerable time past to destroy the
anopheles mosquitoes which infest the watercourses flowing
